1-21-16  -  ‘World’s Largest’ Fastener & Mill Supply Expo Getting Larger— Exhibit Space Projected to Sell Out

The 36th Annual National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo (NIFMSE) scheduled for October 25-27, 2016 at the Sands Expo Center, Las Vegas, Nevada USA is getting better with age. With the expansion and move from Hall A to Hall C & D, NIFMSE Show Director, Susan A. Hurley projects a complete sell-out in exhibit space.

“We already reserved 70,000 net sq. ft. of exhibit space for 500 companies worldwide, putting us well ahead of booth sales this point in time, last year”, reports Hurley. “With the rapidly growing Machinery & Tooling area, we already have 19 companies in 3,800 sq. ft. of space, and we’re not stopping there. We are aggressively marketing to the adhesives and specialty tools industries, including drills, hand tools, power tools, and plant maintenance and safety products, all of which are gaining in popularity with today’s modern distributor.”

Tomorrow’s Opportunities—with all 2015 space renewal assignments now completed, the Expo is open to all new and returning companies for space selection. With plenty of good exhibit space locations still available, now is a great time to reserve exhibit space and get in on the action. Contact Susan Hurley at (614) 895-1279 or email[email protected] to start the process of choosing your location.

With the recent acquisition by the Emerald Expositions, a leading B2B trade show and conference producer, Fastener’s exhibitors and attendees will see minimal to no changes for the 2016 Expo. “It is business as usual. Our priority is to continue serving our customers, both exhibitors and buyers the best way possible and without any disruption,” said Karalynn Sprouse, EVP of Merchandise, International Sourcing & Manufacturing, and Fasteners at Emerald Expositions. “This early in the show cycle, our focus is renewing our 2015 exhibitors and then going after new opportunities. We have already locked in 9 new companies for the show. Next month, we will be looking at the buyer universe and strategizing on getting more buyers to the show by extending invitations to engineers, specifiers, and other recommenders from manufactures looking for better solutions. The future of NIFMSE looks very bright and I have faith the team will get it there.”

What Exhibitors said…

  • “I was pleased with the turnout in 2015. It looks like 2016 is going to be even bigger.”

  • “I think it is a very important show. I have always had good response from exhibiting.”

What Buyers said..

Candidates can be nominated by owners or managers, who are welcome to submit an essay on behalf of a nominated candidate. There is a limit of one nominated candidate per company, however there is no limit to the number of individual candidates from any given company who submit an essay on their own behalf.

9-30-11  -  Nucor Fastener Wins Rare ITC Victory On Imports

©2011 GlobalFastenerNews.com.  Reprinted with permission.

On September 20 the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) remanded the negative preliminary determination of the International Trade Commission (ITC) in the antidumping investigation of standard steel fasteners from China and Taiwan.

The case stemmed from one of two 2009 petitions brought by the Fastener Division of Nucor Corp. alleging that U.S. producers face material injury from dumped imports of Chinese and Taiwanese fasteners.

The ruling comes one year after the CIT dismissed Nucor Fastener's appeal on its other petition, upholding the Department of Commerce's refusal to initiate consideration of currency undervaluation as a subsidy.

In remanding the antidumping case, the court handed domestic fastener producers an important victory in their efforts to combat dumped imports, according to Alan Price of Wiley Rein LLP in Washington,DC, counsel to domestic fastener producer Nucor Fastener.

"Reversals of ITC preliminary determinations are very rare, and the reversal in the fasteners case demonstrates that the original determination was deeply flawed,” stated Price.  "There is no doubt thatU.S. fastener companies and their workers are being injured by dumped imports from China andTaiwan.”

The court remanded the case back to the ITC for a new determination that will be due by December 7, 2011.

Nucor Fastener still faces an uphill legal battle. The original ITC vote against Nucor Fastener's antidumping petition was 6-0, requiring the commission to a 4-2 decision in favor of the judge's ruling to reinstate the case.

In its 137-page public report "Certain Standard Steel Fasteners from China and Taiwan," the ITC concluded that standard fastener imports did not gain more market share from 2006 to 2008. Likewise, the commission said Nucor Fastener "failed to provide adequate details" to support allegations that it was losing sales and revenues to cheaper imports.

The ITC determined "there is not a reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is materially injured or threatened with material injury by reason of imports of certain standard steel fasteners from China that are allegedly subsidized and from China and Taiwan that are allegedly sold in the U.S. at less than fair value."

According to the ITC, from 2006 to 2008 imports of certain standard steel fasteners from Chinaincreased by 4.48% and were valued at an estimated $291 million in 2008. Imports from Taiwan over the same time period decreased by 19.09% and were valued at an estimated $395 million in 2008.

In its petitions, filed in September 2009, Nucor Fastener alleged average dumping margins of 145% for Chinese imports, and 74% for imports from Taiwan.

Price said Nucor Fastener is one of the last remaining producers of standard fasteners in the United States, and that many of those still in existence have been forced to slash production, resulting in significantly decreased operating income, profits, production workers and wages.

"If we’re going to have jobs in the United States, then we need to make fasteners and other products here,” Price noted. "Requiring goods to be sold at non-dumped and subsidized prices will bring jobs back to the United States.”

Nucor Fastener employs more than 225 workers at its 500,000 sq ft facility in St. Joe, IN. Web: nucor-fastener.com ©2011 GlobalFastenerNews.com

9-29-11  -  Las Vegas Fastener Expo to be Third Largest in 30-Year History

The National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo scheduled for October 19-21 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada has grown to 581 exhibiting companies and 743 booths, making it the third largest exhibition in the event’s proud 30-plus year history, informs Susan A. Hurley, CEM, general manager.

"We have sold 744 booths (74,300 net sq. ft.) to 582 companies from throughout the USA and 15 other countries from around the world. We continue receiving new inquiries and exhibit space contracts on a daily basis. I believe we will have 750 or more booths on the floor before the Expo opens on October 20th. The Machinery & Tooling Area alone has 43 companies utilizing 6,100 sq. ft. of space. Exhibitors will not be lonely, either. Over 2,500 persons have already registered to attend and we are expecting over 4,000”, continues the veteran Expo Manager.

"North America's Largest" Fastener Expo will feature the latest fastener and fastener-related products and services including fasteners of every size and description, fastener-making machinery and tooling, precision-formed parts, inspection, testing and packaging machinery, air tools, cutting tools, drills, hand tools, plant & safety equipment, inventory management systems and a myriad of other items of interest to manufacturers, distributors, importers, sales reps and other fastener disciplines.

"Las Vegas will be the center of the fastener industry universe for three days”, say Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire, general partners. "In addition to the Expo, we have an all-day conference on Wednesday filled with training and information of vital, current interest to everyone in the fastener business. We throw our big Welcome Reception Wednesday evening, and then have a Kick-Off Breakfast program just before the Expo opens on Thursday morning. The whole three days are fun and exciting”, add Jim and Mike.

7-5-11  -  What to do if asked to sign conflict minerals disclosure

Conflict Minerals Disclosure

The Dodd-Frank Act, passed a year ago, requires the Securities and Exchange Commission to order an estimated 5,994 public companies to report whether they obtain any of four metals (tungsten, tin, gold and tantalum) from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Humanitarian groups accuse warlords in Congo of enslaving, raping and murdering residents in the aftermath of the country's civil war. That misery, they say, is funded by "conflict minerals" torn from Congo's rich mines. (Source: Bloomberg)

Here is a video link for more information on the Dodd-Frank Act. http://wapo.st/kFKgxs

What To Do

You may receive a disclosure request from one of your OEM customers, especially if you serve electronic manufacturing.

Fastener manufacturers are beginning to responded to these disclosure requests by asking their raw material suppliers for data.

The rules are not final and there is an effort underway to delay the rules or find ways to limit their affect on small businesses in the supply chain. There are no clear answers yet.

Pac-West will keep you posted on any developments.

6-1-11  -  Las Vegas Fastener Expo to Feature Expanded Machinery & Tooling Area

Las Vegas Fastener Expo to Feature Expanded Machinery and Tooling Area

The 15th Annual National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo, October 19-21, 2011, Sands Expo & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada USA will feature the largest display of fastener-making machinery and tooling in North America, according to Susan A. Hurley, CEM, General Manager.

"Our alliance with the International Fastener Machinery & Suppliers Association (IFMSA) has really been a win-win for everyone. We have enjoyed a great relationship with the local, regional and national fastener associations and the fastener media worldwide for many years. Our new relationship with IFMSA has brought us most of their members and others from around the world. Just like we know fastener people, Ray and Doug Zirkle know the machinery and tooling people. Of course, 2011 being the off-year for the big fastener expo in Dusseldorf has been an added bonus. The beautiful part about this alliance is that the fastener manufacturers who buy machinery and tooling are already at our Expo showing their product lines to distributors, importers and other buyers, so there is a built-in audience for the machinery and tooling companies”, say Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire, the Expo’s General Partners.

We also credit our Official Expo Contractor, the Freeman Company, with working with us to develop a special material handling rate which the machinery and tooling manufacturers find very affordable”, add Bannister and McGuire.

"We are delighted to have so many of the world’s leading machinery and tooling companies with us and we hope to add even more between now and the Expo”, says Expo Manager Hurley.
Following is a list of the Machinery and Tooling companies who will exhibit in Las Vegas (as of June 1, 2011):

5-3-11  -  Historic Columbus Fastener Show to Cease Operation: Focus on Las Vegas Event

Historic Columbus Fastener Show to Cease Operation: Focus on Las Vegas Event

"Show Management is very disappointed with the low exhibitor participation and lack of distributor attendance at the 2011 National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo held last week in Columbus, Ohio. We employed our best efforts to heavily promote the event to many thousands of fastener manufacturers, importers, distributors, sales reps and others throughout the world using direct mail, trade journal and web site advertising, multiple electronic bulletins, social media and every other means at our command. We are baffled by the poor turnout.

"Conversations with several of our most loyal exhibitors indicate that the fastener industry needs and wants to reduce the number of trade shows held. They say that the National Industrial Fastener Expo in Las Vegas is the one big event everyone points to and that all of the smaller state, regional and national shows are also suffering a decline in exhibitor participation and distributor attendance. There simply are not enough marketing dollars and travel funds to support all of the shows.

"We have listened!

"We have made a painful decision to end the historic Columbus Show and focus 100% of our energy, talent, time and resources on making the National Industrial Fastener Expo in Las Vegas even bigger and better than ever before. We want the Vegas Show to be the center of the fastener industry universe.

In making this huge sacrifice, we are taking the lead in reducing the number of fastener industry trade shows. We trust that the entire industry will appreciate our initiative and follow our lead.
We also thank all those exhibiting companies and attendees which have supported our Columbus Show for over three decades. We are grateful for the past and look forward to a bright future for everyone in Las Vegas,” say Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire, general partners.

The National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo will be held October 19-21, 2011 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada USA. For more information contact Susan A. Hurley, CEM, at (614) 895-1279, email [email protected] or visit the Expo web site atwww.fastenershows.com.

4-18-11  -  Vegas Fastener Expo Going Strong

Vegas Fastener Expo Going Strong: NFDA to Meet at Expo: Golf Outing Resumed: Official Fastener Expo Bar to be Named

The National Industrial Fastener & Mill Supply Expo, October 19-21, 2011 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, is reporting over 60,000 net square feet of exhibit space already sold, which is appreciably ahead of last year’s same date figures.

"We are also pleased to announce that the National Fastener Distributors Association (NFDA) will be holding its annual city meeting in conjunction with this year’s Expo. We feel this is a win-win situation for everyone concerned. Watch for complete program information and other details coming soon”, say Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire, the Expo’s General Partners.

"We are also resuming the popular golf outing. Now that we have moved the event up into October and are ending the Expo on Friday afternoon, we feel the time is right to bring the golf outing back. We have scheduled the tournament for Saturday morning, October 22 at the Royal Links Golf Club. There will be an awards luncheon following play and golfers can depart ‘Vegas later that day or stay over until Sunday and enjoy the many attractions of the ‘City That Never Sleeps’. We believe this is a perfect way to end this year’s Expo”, says Susan Hurley, General Manager.

"Last, but certainly not least, we are working with our contacts at the Sands Expo and the Venetian/Palazzo to identify the best bar, located close to the Expo, where our Expo exhibitors and visitors can gather before, during and after the Expo to network and visit. We recognize that ‘Vegas is a huge city with so many places to dine and drink, so we want to find and recommend a large bar which will accommodate lots of fastener industry folks and serve as a central gathering place. We will announce this location soon”, say Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire, the Expo’s General Partners.

3-17-10  -  IFE Merges with National Industrial Fastener Show

International Fastener Machinery & Suppliers Association (IFMSA) to Endorse and Support Event

The International Fastener Exposition (IFE) has merged with the National Industrial Fastener Show scheduled for November 8-10, 2010 at the Mandalay bay Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada USA; it was announced by Susan A. Hurley, Show Manager.

"The merging of IFE with the National Industrial Fastener Show will provide the largest marketplace in North America for fasteners, machinery, equipment, tooling, materials, testing and technical services and other related products and services for the fastener and precision formed parts industries”, said Raymond P. Zirkle, Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire.

"This merger is something we have all thought about for some time because it makes good sense and responds to the need for reducing the number of fastener industry exhibitions. We believe it offers something for the entire industry, all under one roof at the same time. The core exhibition will continue to feature the latest in fasteners and related products and services of interest to distributors, manufacturer’s reps, independent sales reps and others while the machinery, equipment, tooling and other products will be of interest to fastener manufacturers from all over the world, most of whom are already exhibiting with us”, reason Bannister and McGuire.

The International Fastener Machinery & Suppliers Association (IFMSA) has announced its endorsement and support of the expo. Respected industry veterans Ray and Doug Zirkle will be marketing the event to IFMSA member companies as well as other makers of fastener machinery, equipment, tooling and related suppliers worldwide.

1-18-10  -  China slaps anti-dumping duties on EU-made screws

China slaps anti-dumping duties on EU-made screws

December 22, 2009

BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Wednesday slapped anti-dumping duties on imports of carbon steel fasteners from the European Union, just a day after the EU extended import duties on shoes from China and Vietnam.

A review found that Chinese producers of certain types of fasteners such as screws and washers had been materially injured by dumping by EU firms, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement on its website.

It will enforce the anti-dumping duties, ranging from 16.8 percent to 24.6 percent, starting December 28.

China has been involved in a tussle with the EU over fasteners this year, just one of a series of trade complaints lodged against Beijing by its trading partners.

The EU imposed its own anti-dumping duties on Chinese imports of some screws and bolts in January, a decision that China later challenged at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

While China has seen more cases taken against it, it has also grown more ready to bring cases of its own, something many analysts say is a healthy sign that it is becoming a more active member of the WTO.

In the latest instance of trade tensions, EU ministers voted on Tuesday to extend import duties on shoes from China and Vietnam by 15 months, despite a vote on November 19 by the EU's anti-dumping committee to reject plans to extend the tariffs.

China said it was unhappy with the decision and would take action via the WTO.

"China is extremely dissatisfied," Yao Jian, a spokesman for China's Commerce Ministry, said in a statement on the ministry's website (www.mofcom.gov.cn) late on Tuesday.

1-18-10  -  Canada will continue to impose anti-dumping duties on certain carbon steel fasteners

Canadian International Trade Tribunal Issues Orders: Certain Fasteners From China and Chinese Taipei
OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 6, 2010) - The Canadian International Trade Tribunal today issued orders following the expiry review of its findings made on January 7, 2005, in Inquiry No. NQ-2004-005, concerning the dumping of certain fasteners originating in or exported from the People's Republic of China (China) and Chinese Taipei and the subsidizing of such products originating in or exported from China.

The Tribunal found that the resumed dumping of certain carbon steel fasteners from China and Chinese Taipei, and the resumed subsidizing of such products from China were likely to cause injury to the domestic industry. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will therefore continue to impose anti-dumping and countervailing duties on these products.

The Tribunal also found that the dumping of certain stainless steel fasteners from Chinese Taipei was unlikely to result in injury. The CBSA will therefore not continue to impose anti-dumping duties on these products.

The Tribunal is an independent quasi-judicial body that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Finance. It hears cases on dumped and subsidized imports, safeguard complaints, complaints about federal government procurement and appeals of customs and excise tax rulings. When requested by the federal government, the Tribunal also provides advice on other economic, trade and tariff matters.

1-18-10  -  Industry makes major equipment donations to El Camino College Compton Educational Center

El Camino College Compton Educational Center, announced the receipt of nearly $1 million in donated training equipment for the new Aerospace Fastener Manufacturing Technology Center. "The addition of this equipment will help train students on equipment used in the industry and meet an anticipated shortfall of skilled workers in aerospace fastener manufacturing," said Rodney Murray, Dean of Career & Technical Education at El Camino College Compton Educational Center.

The aerospace fastener manufacturing industry is a global market that generates $6.5 billion in global sales. Southern California is home to dozens of manufacturers, including three of the world’s largest. In fact, over $4.5 billion in global sales are generated from Southern California-based manufacturers and distributors. More than half of these manufacturers are located within a 20-mile radius around Compton Educational Center.

El Camino College Compton Educational Center, and the California Community Colleges Centers for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) at El Camino College, Cerritos College, North Orange County Community College District, and Los Angeles Community College District, joined forces with the Industrial Fasteners Institute (IFI) to develop a training program for California-based aerospace fastener manufacturers in training skilled workers at the El Camino College Compton Educational Center.

The donations included major pieces of equipment and support materials needed to train students to secure future jobs in the aerospace fastener industry. Equipment donors include P.B. Fasteners of Gardena, Turncorp Inc, of Carson, Shafer Machinery in Santa Fe Springs, Bristol Industries in Brea, and Alcoa Fastening Systems in Torrance. Johnson Gage Company of Bloomfield, Connecticut, donated thread measurement equipment to the college. Other aerospace fastener manufacturers and suppliers such as The Phillips Screw Company have committed to support the center with donations as the need arises.

The aerospace industry is expecting a turnaround in the economy later in 2010 or early 2011. In addition, retirements of experienced workers means industry needs highly trained replacements for these well paying jobs. The Centers for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) and the Industrial Fasteners Institute have formed an alliance with industry to develop the only training program in the Western United States focused on aerospace fastener manufacturing.

The alliance formed between the community colleges and industry will continue to work closely to develop the training program at the El Camino College Compton Educational Center, and collaborate with other community colleges in California to offer the training in communities that support this critical industry.

About the Aerospace Fastener Training Program
The Centers for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT) at El Camino College, Cerritos College, North Orange County Community College District, and the Los Angeles Community College District, have developed a unique training program to assist California-based aerospace fastener manufactures in finding solutions to the skilled worker shortage. The CACT’s teamed with a host of industry partners including the Industrial Fastener Institute (IFI), to form a highly specialized alliance dedicated to curriculum development. The training program is located at the El Camino College Compton Educational Center in Compton, California.

About the Centers for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT)

The CACT’s offer technology education, manufacturing training, and consulting services that contribute to continuous workforce development, technology deployment and business development.
