Q & A with Ed SmithPosition on the Board: Director
Company: Wurth Timberline Fasteners - Commerce City, CA
How did you get started in the fastener industry?
My Mom worked for a steel company that also owned a fastener company. After graduating high school I needed more than what my job at the go-kart track would provide, so I took a job in shipping at A&I Bolt and Nut where I worked on the dock. After a few years, I moved on to Porteous Fastener Company. So I guess my mom made me do it!
What is the best advice you ever got?
Having worked with many of our industry leaders, I've gotten a lot of great advice. What stands out the most for me is "Shut up and be a good listener!"
Do you have a personal goal for 2020?
My personal goal at the start of the year was to practice more yoga and increase my flexibility. Now I just want to stay healthy!
What inspires you?
That "Aha!" moment when you're struggling with a problem or a decision and you finally get it. Or when you are working with someone on a problem and see that person realize a solution. Let the light bulb in your mind shine bright!
When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Easy, I wanted to play 2nd base for the Chicago Cubs, or be a professional wrestler in the WWF.
What do you do when you're not at work?
I enjoy playing beer league hockey, snowboarding, and spending time with my wife Carla.
What is your favorite vacation destination?
That depends on the season. Carla and I really enjoy taking snowboarding trips out West, sightseeing trips to Europe, or a beach vacation in Jamaica.
What TV show did you binge recently?
With travel being what it is, my binge-watching isn't what it used to be. During the shutdown, we watched Dead to Me on Netflix, and I watched Letterkenny on Hulu.
Who is your favorite singer or group?
Depends on the mood, or activity. Lately, it's been more about genres versus artists. On Pandora, I go to Yacht Rock, Hipster BBQ, and Classic Hip-Hop. My favorite group of all time is Blink 182.
Any personal message you'd like to share with Pac-West and/or the industry?
We will get through all of this, and when we do I can't wait to see all of you in person where we can share handshakes, hugs, and enjoy a drink over a good story!
