CARDINAL FASTENER CLOSURE - DOKKA FASTENERS Inc. to Expand Capabilities

Bedford Heights, OH, January 9, 2015–

Cardinal Fastener, opened in 1983 and acquired by the Wurth Group in 2011 will be closing the plant and transferring the equipment to Dokka Fasteners, Inc. located in Auburn Hills, MI. Dokka Fasteners Inc. is part of the Wurth Hot Forging Group. The transition is anticipated to be complete within 90-120 days.

“The decision to close the Cardinal Fastener operation was difficult after being in business over thirty years. Unfortunately, having two separate plants with similar capabilities located so close together became increasingly difficult to justify. We appreciate the support of our customers and plan on supporting their needs again after the equipment has been installed and commissioned at the Dokka Fasteners operation. Every effort will be made to minimize the impact of the transition on our valued customers.” Marc Strandquist, EVP of the Wurth Group

Dokka Fasteners Inc. is a state-of-the-art hot forging and machining operation utilizing automation and robotics throughout the plant to manufacture products of superior quality and used in some of the most critical applications and harshest environments. The plant opened in late 2010 North of Detroit in Auburn Hills, MI. With the addition of equipment from Cardinal Fastener, Dokka Fasteners will have expanded capabilities to better support our customer’s requirements.

At Dokka Fasteners our primary focus is to provide our customers with Security – Security of working with a supplier who is financially secure, a supplier who constantly re-invests capital into our manufacturing and inspection processes, a supplier who effectively manages the sub-supply base, and builds a robust product designed to exceed customer expectations. Through effective implementation of the Dokka Production System and its inherent Quality and LEAN principles, Dokka offers our customers a total Commitment To Security.

10/31/14  -  Tom Retires From FASCO

Well, it's a happy day as well as a sad one for all of us at FASCO!! On October 30, 2014, after 29 years with FASCO, Tom has finally reached his goal of retirement. We are soooooo happy for Tom!!!!! He deserves it as much as anyone we know!

As was his humble style, Tom wanted to retire without a big to do or a lot of fanfare. He just wants us to carry on what he has been a part of for so long. Tom leaves behind a long legacy at FASCO, but his personal value system stands out to us the most. He always worked hard for all of us. He was honest, trustworthy, reliable, and fair. He always put our needs ahead of his own. He treated all of us with respect as human beings. He was a "What You See, Is What You Get" kind of guy. He had an unselfish, team oriented approach. We have always admired these traits in him and believe that these core values have been left to all of us at FASCO to carry forward.

I feel honored and proud to have worked with Tom, but most of all I am proud to call him my friend!!!

8/22/14  -  Cardinal Fastener Hosts Fastener Training Institute

Cleveland, OH - Cardinal Fastener Inc., a manufacturer of large diameter hot forged fasteners, was selected for the second time to host a plant tour on July 29th for students attending the Fastener Training Institute’s “Fastener Training Week”, which teaches fastener manufacturing personnel and distributors about manufacturing processes and quality systems and standards employed at various fastener manufacturing facilities.

The attendees were welcomed by Bill Boak, President of Cardinal Fastener, who provided a brief history of Cardinal Fastener, which was founded in 1983 to provide fastener distributors with quick shipping of high strength, hot forged fasteners, including same-day or next day shipping of pre-forged blanks and 3-5 day turnaround for custom parts and fasteners. Boak pointed out that that Cardinal Fastener became one of the first fastener manufacturers to receive ISO 9001:2008 certification, and that the company was recently transformed into the “New” Cardinal Fastener through significant capital investments to expand and upgrade its manufacturing capabilities in conjunction with various quality improvement initiatives.

For example, over the past year, Cardinal teamed up with factory representatives to provide training sessions that upgraded the skills of its work force. Cardinal also purchased five new CNC machines, enabling the company to further integrate hot forging and precision machining of components utilizing all grades of steel, as well as other high strength, high temperature, corrosion resistant materials, including various grades of stainless steel as well as exotic alloys such as Inconel®, Hastelloy®, and Monel®.

During the factory tour, Bill Walczak, Cardinal’s Eastern Regional Sales Manager, provided a brief overview of the company’s broad manufacturing capabilities, including hex and square head bolts, heavy hex structural bolts, socket head and hex head cap screws, 12 point and hex flange bolts, studs, and specialty parts ranging from 1⁄2” to 3” dia. (M16 to M72 metric). After Walczak’s presentation, the group embarked on a walking tour of Cardinal’s 90,000 square foot plant, where they witnessed a newly rebuilt 600-ton Ajax hot forging upsetter making a 2 1⁄4” hex head. The Ajax upsetter is used to manufacture fasteners and specialty parts in diameters up to 3” (M72) and unlimited lengths.

The group then observed Short-Lead-Time manufacturing cells, where highly trained experienced operators transform pre-
forged blanks into finished product, enabling same day or next day shipping for standard products.

Next on the tour was to observe five new HAAS® CNC lathes, as Cardinal has expanded its CNC machining capabilities to include turning, drilling, tapping, ID/OD threading in diameters up to 20” and lengths up to 40”. Cardinal’s expanded CNC machining capability ensures precision quality and quick turnaround for large bolts, cap screws, studs, and other hot-forged fasteners that require secondary machining.

The last stop on the factory tour was Cardinal’s Quality department, where Fastener Training Week attendees observed a FORNY 600,000 pound capacity tensile tester, optical comparators, a Rockwell and Tukon Hardness tester, magnetic particle inspection, hundreds of thread gauges, and other test/measurement equipment.

According to David DiPace of Palmer Bolt & Supply, “The tour itself was very well organized. I like how you had the different stations set up to highlight different types or stages of the forming process. Also walking around the plant we were able to see the various blanks and see the capabilities of Cardinal in terms of size and product type. Everyone at Cardinal was very welcoming and made our group feel comfortable. The operators of the machines were great at taking time to explain what they were doing and their focus on quality was obvious.” Another attendee, Lisa Gersey, of Hodell-Natco Industries (Cleveland branch), noted how “it was a pleasure touring your facility. Your staff was very friendly and informative. It was a true learning experience. You have a class operation over there.”

Jeannine Christensen, Director of Education for the Fastener Training Institute, was so impressed by the tour that she invited Cardinal Fastener to host an upcoming “Fastener Training Week” tour in the fall of 2014.

Cardinal Fastener Inc. manufactures large diameter hot forged fasteners and specialty products ranging from 1⁄2” to 3” dia. (M16 to M72 metric), with unlimited lengths, including hex and square head bolts, heavy hex structural bolts, socket head and hex head cap screws, 12 point and hex flange bolts, studs and special configurations to customer designs. Cardinal employs single blow open die and two-stroke closed die hot forging presses, cut and roll-threading, coating and plating, and CNC lathes for specialty parts.

Kevin Chavis, Bill Howe of H.W. A last-minute addition to the conference program was an update on the threaded rod anti-dumping case by Andy Cohn and Rosa Hearn, with a statement from Greg Iverson of Bay Standard (Brentwood, California) read to the audience and an audio clip from a Fully Threaded Radio interview with Don Haggerty of Stelfast (Edison, New Jersey).

Our popular Business Owners Forum and Business Executives Forum also occurred on day two of the conference.  Always one of the most highly rated sessions of every conference, attendees share experiences and solutions in a frank interchange.

The conference’s second day ended with a reception and dinner, featuring a Canadian trivia contest.

The final day of the conference offered a panel presentation on “Disaster Planning for Your Fastener Business.”  Panelists included Andy Cohn, Kelly Cole from WCL Company (City of Industry, California), Hans Fuller of Fuller Metric (Surrey, British Columbia), Jennifer Harder, and Tim Roberto Jr.

10-8-12  -  Obituary: Bernie Singer

The Singer family is sad to announce the passing of Bernie Singer on October 5, 2012, three weeks after celebrating his 82nd birthday.

Born September 17, 1930 in New York City, he spent his first 35 years there, eventually learning the hardware business. In 1965 he moved to Los Angeles and entered the fastener business. After having worked at Champion Screw, Alvo, and Heads and Threads, he started B&B Fasteners in September 1967.

Steven Singer writes, “A man always with ideas an innovation (some good, some bad), just selling screws wasn’t enough for him. In 1973 he started a manufacturing plant that grew to more than 50 machines, able to manufacture screws from #2 through 5/8 diameter.

“Again, this wasn’t enough, so in 1975 Bernie began importing fasteners of his own design, in his own boxes, with his own designed logo. He also designed several new wood and sheet metal thread patterns.

“Always thinking, after retiring in 1984, he taught himself computer language and designed the FastPrint program. This program was able to create mechanical prints for screws by compiling them in sections to complete a finished blueprint when computers were still work in MS DOS. When Windows came along, he upgraded his software to the new systems and added new items, such as washers, nuts, pop rivets and special shapes and forms.

“Today my brother Cliff Singer keeps up the family tradition of fasteners through his company, S&S Screw Products.”

Funeral services for Bernie Singer will be held October 10, 2012 at Eden Mortuary in Mission Hills, California.

“October 10 is my 60th birthday,” said Steve Singer, “and I am proud that in the end he found a way to give me a surprise party. To those who never met him, I wish you could have. To those who have met Bernie, we appreciate your condolences.”

The family can be contacted at S&S Screw Products, PO Box 1024, Woodland Hills CA 91356.

8-26-11  -  ITW Integrates Leading Midwest Fastener Divisions

Effective immediately, Illinois Tool Works, a $16 billion diversified manufacturer of engineered products and specialty systems, announces the integration of two of its Midwest industrial fastener divisions. The two divisions, ITW Bee Leitzke and ITW Shakeproof Industrial Products, which operate five facilities in Illinois and Wisconsin, have integrated into a single entity called the ITW Shakeproof Group.

Phil Johnson, general manager of ITW Shakeproof Group said, "These two divisions have a long and rich history in their respective markets. While they have operated as separate brand entities, over time they have serviced similar markets, manufactured similar industrial products, and shared customers.”
Johnson noted the new name reflects the heritage of the various brands. "Over time, ITW has grown and acquired a group of industrial businesses that have great branded value. The brand names are important to us, and in communications with customers, we learned that the names are still important to our customers.”

Unlike its current structure, where a customer would have to contact each individual facility regarding products, the newly formed Shakeproof Group’s long term goals is to enable the customers to contact one facility for the Bee Leitzke, Mellows and Shakeproof Stampings product lines.

"With Bee Leitzke and Shakeproof Industrial Products sharing common markets like agriculture, heavy truck and equipment, pole line, outdoor power equipment, appliance, and railroad, it seemed natural for us to bring the two businesses together. We are excited about working towards arming customers with the ability to have one direct contact for the complete off the shelf standard product side of our business,” Johnson added. ITW Shakeproof Alpine, a custom threaded screw manufacturer, will continue to operate individually within the ITW Shakeproof Group.

Johnson added that as the integration will take place over the next several months, customers are asked to continue to conduct business as usual. Common business practices such as Contact Individuals, Customer Account Numbers, and Remit To Address have not changed.

"In the near future, the biggest change for the ITW Shakeproof Group will be converting all facilities into a new ERP System. We may see a couple of days of suspended business during this transition. Other than that, it is business as usual for us and our customers. Any future changes will be communicated early and often,” Johnson stated.

Shakeproof’s history dates back to 1923 when ITW launched it as the first line of manufactured products from its tool making business. True to its name, Shakeproof invented a wide variety of stampings for machinery that resisted vibration and loosening. Shakeproof’s inventions of Tooth Lock Washers, Spring Washers, and Square Cone Washers quickly became industry standards. In 1991 ITW purchased the Mellowes Helical Lock Washer facility in Milwaukee, WI to compliment the stamping products business.

Similarly, ITW Bee Leitzke was established in 1929. Known as the "pin people,” Bee Leitzke manufactures a wide variety of cotter, clevis and hitch pins for industrial markets. ITW purchased Bee in 1996 and the current company resulted from the merger of three prominent fastener manufacturers: Medalist/Rein Leitzke, Bee Industries, and Hobbs Fasteners. Bee Leitzke’s manufacturing facility is located in Watertown, WI, and the warehousing and administration office is located in Iron Ridge, WI.

This event was all about raising money for the scholarship program and, thanks to our players and sponsors, we raised $3500. We are hopeful to continue to increase the size each year so we can make more money available to Pac-West members and their employees’ children for education.

You’ll find more information about Pac-West scholarships here on the website under the Resources tab.

Now for the fun stuff

For all those that came out this year, we got to meet the third generation of Cal-Fasteners, Joe Truckey Jr. I can now say I have met the strongest person that has ever worked in the fastener industry, and he proved it by carrying his father Joe Truckey, his uncle Bob Truckey and Bob Reynolds from INxSQL Software on his back to victory. I would like to congratulate Joe Jr. (and I guess the rest of his team) on the victory, and I would also like to wish him the best of luck on his upcoming service in the Navy. For those of you who are interested, they shot a round of 60.

Our next best score was a 65 which was shot by two groups:  the team of Jim Riley, Mark Jonus, Dan McDevitt and John Thalasinos from Stork Materials Testing and T & T Enterprises and the team of Kelly Cole, Ray Avitia and Kevin Chappell from WCL Company and Ababa.

I’d also like to thank Kelly Cole, Joe Truckey and Joe Truckey Jr. for donating their winnings back to the scholarship program.

We also had lots of contest holes: Long Drives, Straight Drives, Closest to the Pins, a Vegas Hole, and Longest Putts (dubious in nature because Tim Marzano had to admit that his group couldn’t get close to the hole).

We also had a Hole in One Contest for a brand new Dodge Charger thanks to ND Industries. Unfortunately the car is back at the dealership and not in my driveway!

Congratulations to all the contest hole winners: Barbara Martin, Kelly Lehman, Joe Truckee Jr, Bob Truckee, Tim Marzano and Ray Avitia.

Again, thank you to all the sponsors and golfers who were part of this event.  We hope you can participate again in 2012!
